Engineering the Structure Behind the Architecture

Every building begins with an idea. Turning that idea into a structure that is safe, efficient and practical to build requires the right engineering decisions from the very beginning.

At Stratum, we provide structural engineering consultancy across residential, commercial, high-rise, institutional, hospitality, healthcare, data centre and industrial developments. Our involvement extends from early structural studies and system selection through analysis, detailed design, documentation and construction-stage support.

Working closely with architects, developers, PMCs and MEP teams, we develop structural solutions that respond to the architecture while considering performance, constructability, coordination and project requirements.

The Right Structure Starts with the Right Decisions

Structural engineering decisions made early in a project can influence almost everything that follows—from architectural flexibility and foundation requirements to construction methodology, material quantities and cost.

That is why our work starts with understanding the project rather than applying a predetermined structural solution.

We study the architectural scheme, building geometry, spans, loading conditions, geotechnical information and functional requirements before evaluating the available structural options. Depending on the project, this may involve RCC, structural steel, post-tensioned or precast systems together with shallow or deep foundation solutions.

Each option is considered in relation to the project as a whole, helping establish a structural direction that is technically appropriate, practical to execute and aligned with the architectural intent.

Structural Engineering, From Concept to Construction

Our structural engineering involvement can extend across the complete project lifecycle. Each stage builds on the decisions made before it, allowing the structural design to develop with greater clarity and coordination as the project progresses.

01. Conceptual & Schematic Design

Getting the Structural Direction Right Early

Before detailed calculations begin, the fundamental structural decisions need to be established.

At this stage, our engineers study the architectural concept and available geotechnical information to understand how the proposed building can be structured efficiently. Different structural systems are evaluated against the project’s architectural, technical and commercial requirements.

Depending on the development, the study may consider RCC, structural steel, post-tensioned and precast systems together with appropriate foundation strategies.

Our scope at this stage includes structural feasibility studies, structural system selection, geotechnical evaluation, foundation system assessment and preliminary structural planning.

The outcome is a clear structural direction that gives the architect, client and engineering teams a sound basis for taking the design forward.

02. Design Development

Where the Structural Concept Becomes Engineering

Once the structural direction is established, the design moves into analysis and development.

Three-dimensional analytical models are developed to study the behaviour of the structure under applicable dead, live, wind and seismic loads. The results guide the sizing and development of columns, beams, load-bearing walls, foundations and other structural elements.

But analysis is only one part of this stage.

The structure must also work with the architecture and the services that pass through the building. Our structural engineers therefore coordinate with architects and MEP teams as the design develops, reviewing structural elements alongside HVAC, Electrical, PHE and Fire Protection requirements.

03. Construction Documentation

Making the Design Clear for the People Who Build It

A structural solution is only as effective as the information used to execute it.

Once the engineering is developed and coordinated, our team translates the design into detailed structural documentation for the project and construction teams.

This includes structural plans, framing layouts, sections, connection details, foundation information, structural calculations and other construction drawings required within the project scope.

Particular attention is given to clarity, consistency and coordination across the documentation so that the structural intent can be understood by contractors, project managers and site teams.

Where required, supporting calculations and documentation are also prepared for relevant authority or permit submissions.

04. Construction Administration

Staying Involved When Design Meets Site

Construction often brings questions that cannot be answered by drawings alone.

Site conditions may differ from assumptions. Contractors may require clarification. Reinforcement or steel detailing may need review. Material test results may need to be checked against design requirements.

Our structural engineering support can therefore continue into the construction stage.

Depending on the agreed scope, our team reviews shop and reinforcement drawings, responds to RFIs and technical queries, carries out periodic site inspections and reviews structural work at critical stages.

This can include reinforcement placement, structural steel welding, foundation excavation and material testing reports such as concrete cube or cylinder results.

Maintaining this connection between the design team and the site team helps preserve the structural intent as the project moves from drawings into construction.

Designed Together. Coordinated Before Site.

A building does not separate itself into Structural, HVAC, Electrical, Plumbing and Fire systems once construction begins. They all have to occupy the same physical space.

A structural beam can affect an HVAC route. A service opening can influence structural detailing. A change in equipment or building services can have implications for loads and supporting elements.

These interfaces need to be considered during design.

As an integrated Structural and MEP consultancy, Stratum brings the relevant engineering disciplines into the coordination process. Our structural engineers work with HVAC, Electrical, PHE and Fire Protection teams to review interfaces and identify potential conflicts as the design develops.

The intention is straightforward: resolve coordination issues on the drawing board wherever possible, rather than discovering them after work has begun on site.

Experience Across Structures of Every Scale

Structural requirements change considerably from one building type to another. Our team’s experience across different sectors gives us exposure to a wide range of structural challenges.

High-Rise Developments

Tall residential and commercial buildings where vertical loading, wind behaviour, seismic considerations, structural efficiency and foundation requirements become increasingly important.

Residential

High-rise towers, residential communities and large-scale developments where efficient structural planning needs to work closely with architectural layouts and repetitive construction requirements.

Commercial & IT Campuses

Large office and technology developments requiring structural efficiency, flexibility and extensive coordination with building services.

Data Centres

Technically demanding facilities where equipment loads, building services and operational requirements influence structural planning and design.

Industrial Structures

RCC and structural steel systems developed around the functional, equipment and operational requirements of industrial facilities.

Healthcare & Hospitality

Hospitals, hotels and similar developments where the structure must accommodate extensive building services and specialized functional requirements.

Complex & Special Structures

Architecturally challenging projects involving cantilevers, large spans or unconventional structural requirements that demand closer interaction between architecture and engineering.

Engineering Experience, Measured in Scale

The scale of our team’s past assignments provides an indication of the structural environments in which our engineers have worked.

How We Take a Structure From Concept to Site

Good structural engineering is a progression of informed decisions. Our process keeps those decisions connected from the first review of the architecture through construction-stage support.

Understand

We begin with the architecture, site conditions, project requirements and available geotechnical information.

Evaluate

Structural systems, materials and foundation alternatives are considered against the needs of the project.

Analyse

The proposed structure is modelled and studied under the relevant loading conditions.

Design

Structural elements and foundations are developed based on analysis, performance requirements and the selected system.

Coordinate

The structural design is reviewed alongside architectural and MEP requirements to address interfaces between disciplines.

Document

The engineering is translated into coordinated drawings, calculations and construction information.

Support

Where included in our scope, the structural team remains involved through technical reviews, RFIs, inspections and construction-stage clarifications.

Why Stratum for Structural Engineering?

Experience Across RCC & Steel

Our team brings structural design experience across reinforced concrete and structural steel systems, allowing the engineering approach to respond to the requirements of the project rather than being limited to one structural solution.

Experience with Complex Developments

Our team's exposure includes high-rise buildings, large residential and IT campuses, industrial structures, data centres, hospitals, hotels and institutional developments.

Structural + MEP Coordination

Structural Engineering sits within Stratum's wider SMEP capability. This enables direct coordination with HVAC, Electrical, PHE and Fire Protection teams as the design develops.

Practical Engineering

A structural solution needs to work beyond the analytical model. Constructability, architectural requirements, building services and commercial considerations form part of the design conversation.

Clear Technical Documentation

We place importance on producing structural information that clearly communicates the engineering intent to the teams responsible for taking it forward.

Support Beyond Design

Where required, our structural involvement continues into construction through shop drawing reviews, RFIs, inspections, technical clarifications and material testing reviews.
